Transcription Scores

Started in 2014, this gradually growing collection of scores have all been created in response to sounds recorded at specific locations. Each one is part graphic score, part psycho-geographical document transcribing elements of the soundscape, mixed with text reflecting on the character of the location. These transcriptions can be performed or simply read as documents of the places that inspired them. If you would like to perform them, please get in touch.

EYEMOUTH, SCOTLAND
Single-page graphic scores (c) 2017.

Sounds in the amusement arcade, EyemouthAmusement Arcade, EyemouthPlayers should create a busy texture blending together shouts, whoops, quotations from the staves and improvisations responding to the jumble of material presented. The performance could be structured as a series of group improvisations, growing progressively in length, each starting with material on the right hand side of the page, performed instrumentally, crescendoing to the left hand side, performed more theatrically as shouts and whoops blended with instrumental sound, and finishing with a short silence (the white space).

Waves on the Beach, EyemouthWaves on the Beach, EyemouthPlayers should read together from left to right, or right to left, either slowly moving across the page for the duration of the performance or repeating the page several times more rapidly. The score transcribes the push and pull of the waves on the beach, with the black shapes showing the rush of water and the white bubbles showing the hiss of the undertow, and the relative width of each shape indicating a crescendo/decrescendo. Numbers can be used to denote beats or repetitions of phrases/material. The texture should be soft-edged.

Created as part of Postcards from Eyemouth, supported by funding from Creative Scotland Open Project Fund and Leeds College of Music. Performed by an ensemble of young musicians from Leeds College of Music, at Eyemouth Hippodrome, 22 April 2017.
